On 4 September 1946, the play by Ben Hecht with music from Kurt Weill and directed by Luther Adler “A Flag Is Born” opened on Broadway. The play was sponsored by the “American League for a Free Palestine” (ALFP). The purpose of the show was to raise funds to support European Jews after the Holocaust and to promote the creation of the State of Israel in Palestine. The text on advertising posters read: “The play ‘A Flag Is Born’ was written to earn money and pay for ships to bring Jews to Palestine... and to encourage American public opinion to support the ongoing struggle for freedom and independence in Palestine”.
The creators of the play sought to establish a similarity between Zionist organisations in Palestine and the heroes of the American Revolution. Three Zionists were pictured on the playbill, one with a rifle, one with a hoe, and the third with a Zionist flag, resembling the silhouettes of three American revolutionaries. The advertisement used the slogan “1776 In Palestine!” and quoted Thomas Jefferson: "Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God". The sponsorship committee included such prominent people as composer Leonard Bernstein, writer Lion Feuchtwanger, mayor of New York William O'Dwyer, and the widow of President Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt.
Marlon Brando’s worldwide fame began with this play. Broadway stars Paul Mooney and Celia Adler also starred.
