On 26 August 1946, Department 3 was established at NII-88 (Scientific-Research Institute No. 88), headed by Chief Designer Sergei Korolev.
Originally called NII-88 (Scientific Research Institute No. 88), the name of the State Union Head Research Institute No. 88 of the Ministry of Armaments which was established on 16 May 1946 on the basis of Artillery Plant No. 88. Department 3 and which was part of the Design Bureau for Special Machine-Building, it would become the backbone of the enterprise now called the S. P. Korolev Rocket and Space Corporation Energia.
In April 1950, Special Design Bureau No. 1 (SDB-1) would be established on the basis of several departments of NII-88. According to the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 4912ss of 13 August 1956, the design bureau together with the pilot plant would be singled out as an independent organisation.
The SDB-1 would design and construct the first artificial Earth satellite, and automatic interplanetary stations launched to the Moon, Venus, and Mars. In 1956-1957, they designed and developed the launch vehicle of the R-7 family, which would place the first artificial satellites in orbit around the Earth.
In the early 1960s, the company would build several versions of the Soyuz spacecraft series. These ships would for a long time be the only manned spacecraft of the USSR and Russia.
Several versions of the Progress unmanned cargo spacecraft, developed by the company, would start supporting the Salyut, Mir, and ISS space stations.
Between 1976 and 1993, the company would become the lead developer of the world's third super-heavy-lift launch vehicle, Energia.
In 1962, Sergei Korolev submitted a memorandum to the USSR government on the participation of SDB-1 specialists in space flights. 35 people from SDB-1 would go to space.
