The Nazis seized the bells to be melted down for German armaments. During the fighting for the liberation of the Austrian capital, Red Army soldiers discovered the relics ready for transport to Hamburg.

At midnight on 29 January 1946, a solemn ceremony of returning the church bells recovered by the Soviet troops was held. The event was attended by Soviet Military Commandant of Vienna Major General Nikita Lebedenko, Interim Mayor and Governor of Vienna General Theodor Körner, and the Archbishop of Vienna Cardinal Theodor Innitzer

The city's clergy and administration received 550 bells. The largest of the three bells at Vienna City Hall weighs 2,002 kilogrammes. It was the one used to notify the city's residents of important events for decades. The oldest of the bells dates back to 1739.

“The National Socialists, who were killing the peoples of Europe, plundered churches and removed bells to turn them into guns; they mocked clergy and religion with their fascist vandalism. (...) Let these bells toll that fascism has been destroyed once and for all. Long live the freedom and democracy of liberty-loving mankind”, Major General Lebedenko said in his solemn speech.

On 12 April 1946, the process of mounting the city hall bells started. A few days later, Vienna’s residents would hear once again their familiar chime.
