At about 06:00 p.m. on 21 December, General George Smith Patton, one of the most famous American servicemen of World War II, died in a hospital in Heidelberg in the American Zone of Occupation.

Patton, a member of the US military staff, fought in Africa, Sicily, and took part in the Battle of Normandy. He served as military governor of Bavaria from May to November 1945.

On 9 December, the day before his reassignment from Germany back to the US, Patton went pheasant hunting. On his way to the hunting lodge at about 11:45 a.m., the general's car collided with an American army truck, causing the military commander to suffer severe injuries, including a broken spine, while the two drivers and the other passenger only sustained minor injuries.

According to Patton's will, he was buried next to "his soldiers" in the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial.
