On 18 December 1945, the Canadian Military Court started proceedings against SS Brigadeführer Kurt Meyer in Aurich.

In June 1944, during Operation Overlord, 27 Canadian soldiers were captured by members of the 25th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment of the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. Between 7-17 June, the Canadian soldiers were all killed – including 11 on the very first day – on direct orders from Meyer. This event was called the “Ardennes Abbey Massacre” after the regiment's location, while the trial itself was also named the “Abbaye Ardenne Case.”

Meyer was found guilty and sentenced to death by firing squad. Later, his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. After serving nearly ten years in prison, he was released.
