An intelligence school – the future NATO School – is established in the American Zone of Occupation.

On 14 December 1945, an American intelligence school began operating in Oberammergau on the infrastructure of the underground complex that manufactured, among other things, the first mass-produced jet fighters, the Messerschmitt Me 262. Instructors arrived from the French city of Dre, where the first such school was opened in November 1944. In late January 1946, the school in Oberammergau welcomed recruits. They would be taught the languages of Eastern Europe, as well as the history and political structure of the USSR.

In 1953, all intelligence schools opened in Germany were placed under the command of the NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE). And in 1975, the institution in Oberammergau became the central school for NATO SHAPE. In 2003, the centre received its current name – NATO School.
