German General Anton Dostler is executed by a firing squad following a decision by a US Military Tribunal.

In addition to the Nuremberg international tribunal, Nazi criminals were tried at military tribunals of other nations in the Grand Alliance. On 12 October 1945, the American military tribunal in Rome sentenced General Anton Dostler to death. The sentence was carried out on 1 December.

Dostler was found guilty of murdering American POWs. In March 1944, a group of American soldiers were supposed to disrupt rail links in northern Italy. The operation failed and 15 soldiers were captured. After the German command learned about the group’s task, they ordered the execution of the captured Americans. The unit in charge of the prisoners tried to challenge the order, but General Dostler, Commander of the 75th Army Corps, demanded that it be carried out, although the execution order hadn’t originated from him.
